Ring Around the Moon

Bright Moon
As I walked outside tonight and looked at the full moon, I noticed a huge ring around it. I'd never seen anything like it before, so I decided to take a few pictures that I posted in this gallery. Can any of you scientists explain this phenomenon?
Ring around the Moon

It's basically ice crystals in the atmosphere that cause the moonlight to be reflected toward you at a certain distance. You can read about it on this page and this other page that goes into more depth.

Now I Know Thanks for the links, Rob. This is good to know. However, now I feel like I've lost a little sense of the mystery and awe that I felt last night. Ignorance ain't bliss, but sometimes it has its simplistic perks. Submitted by eric on Sun, 03/27/2005 - 1:12am.
Mystery

There's still plenty of mystery to be had. I've explained "how," but think of all the "whys."

I still hope I didn't spoil it for you. I look at it and marvel all the more. Maybe that's why I'm a scientist...
